Why did AMD change the name of the open source driver from Radeon to AMDGPU?

When I was looking into R9 290x I found that it’s supported in Radeon open source driver, but not AMDGPU (which I’ll need for my 6900 XT/6800 XT).

ATI owned the Radeon brand and when AMD bought the company in 2006, I guess they could change the name because they own the rights to it. It should be pretty much still the same thing.

They still use the Radeon brand in their latest 6000 series GPU

I know that part. I was referring to the driver name.

they didn’t change the name, its a different driver. the “radeon” driver is still there for older parts.
