Discourse post issue (images + link)

I’m new to the DLN Discourse (been listening to their podcasts for a long time now), but I went to make my first post and it told me that I wasn’t allowed to post it because it had pictures and links in it…

The whole reason why I joined the Discourse forum was for this post :disappointed: , and normally on other discourse platforms (i.e. hashicorp: hxxps://discuss.hashicorp.com/ (:arrow_left: can’t post links…) ) there is a little intro that helps you gain rank (I imagine so things like this don’t happen) but I didn’t get prompted for one.

  • Distribution & Version: Ubuntu 21.04
  • When did the issue start happening? : When I went to do my first post on this Discourse platform
  • What steps do you take that cause the problem? : I attempted to post this text, and it said I can’t post images or links:
Michael reaction video for Linus #3

So, @MichaelTunnell I find it hilarious that during one of your [reaction videos](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbFVcOQ-YH_IQqbnwn-TWugOTFB8bh3GB), specifically [this one](https://youtu.be/sc0B_ckmGwQ), Linus says he doesn't know how to create a link...but then creates a link during the next task :sweat_smile:

The task before, when you were explaining how to create a link: [https://youtu.be/sc0B_ckmGwQ?t=1377](https://youtu.be/sc0B_ckmGwQ?t=1377)

The next task when he is mounting his file share: [https://youtu.be/sc0B_ckmGwQ?t=1526](https://youtu.be/sc0B_ckmGwQ?t=1526)

Specifically this picture from the clip :rofl:

**NOTE:** used tags, because that's what @MichaelTunnell used for his reaction videos post, and posting here instead of YT because I can't include images on a YT post (plus keep hearing they are getting taken down).

Hey welcome! You need to do the tutorial to increase your access level (to prevent bots and stuff)

I think you can message the discourse bot for the tutorial or maybe contact an admin to give you a level boost.

See, that was my experience before with other discourse communities, and normally the @discobot would DM me when I login for the first time. This time though, I wasn’t sent anything… :disappointed:

Also, I tried to DM the @discobot , and it won’t let me… hxxps://imgur.com/a/ZWPokFp (change xx to tt, so you can navigate to it in your web browser) am I missing something… :thinking:

in notifications with discobot, this is where that link leads to: hxxps://discourse.destinationlinux.network/t/welcome-to-dln-community-forum/4583

Hi! To find out what I can do, say @discobot display help.

@discobot display help

I currently know how to do the following things:

@discobot start {name-of-tutorial}

Starts an interactive tutorial just for you, in a personal message. {name-of-tutorial} can be one of: tutorial, advanced tutorial.

@discobot roll 2d6

:game_die: 3, 6

@discobot quote

:left_speech_bubble: If you’re in a bad situation, don’t worry it’ll change. If you’re in a good situation, don’t worry it’ll change. — John Simone

@discobot fortune

:crystal_ball: You may rely on it

@discobot start tutorial

Finally I just got sent it after making this post and doing the @discobot start tutorial…, but I still can’t upload media or send links… even after completing the tutorial… ( I have my certificate: hxxps://discourse.destinationlinux.network/u/elrey741/summary)

@elrey741 first of all, welcome to the forum! I am sorry about the inconveinence with this but it was because we were being inundated by a pathetic spammer who would post horrible photos and we decided to put a threshold on it so a user has to reach the second tier before they can post photos due to this jerk.

Hi @MichaelTunnell,

No problem, I completely understand that. I would’ve thought that the moderator review that I initially went through would’ve stopped them :sweat_smile: , but it’s completely understandable to take more precautions because of mean people. I mainly wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something, and was just making a simple mistake somewhere :sweat_smile:

Whelp, since I was trying to send the post to you, then you can just read it in the code for :sweat_smile: in my original post for this thread. The only other thing that is missing is the picture which I can just upload to imgur for you to see: hxxps://imgur.com/a/z7B2XBq

What i’m getting from this is…

A. There’s a communication problem for new joinees understanding account limitations and how to lift them.
B. Having to gain account privileges to post links/images sucks.
C. I had no idea there was a discobot.

Thank you for the patience and posting this as an issue. I’ll make this a point of discission and see if we can do something better. :slight_smile:

Cool, thanks @Ulfnic!

I’m just glad that it happened to me, and not someone completely new to discourse or DLN. :slightly_smiling_face:

I also have been having this same issue. I have really enjoyed all of you guys content. Been a long time Linux user and always look forward to see or listen to your shows. :slightly_smiling_face:

Welcome to the forums!

Welcome to the forums @Hacker_Planet. One of the things that will help is completing the tutorial. It wasn’t sent automatically, but if you just reply to this or any other public message (you can just use this thread) with:

@discobot start tutorial (without the formatted text around it)

then that should be a step in the right direction.

You can also bypass the links restriction by just replacing using hxxps (instead of using https or posting links in formatted text), and you can post images on imgur.com till the admins get this sorted out.

similar to how I did here :arrow_up:

Thank you all for being helpful. I will have to give your advice a shot. Have an awesome rest of the weekend.

You’ve disabled me in your preferences. You need to allow new user onboarding tips to interact with me.

Here’s what I have in the settings related to the discobot:

Welcome post drop-down:

Not much customization :confused:

I’ll check out the “Start the new user tutorial for all new users”

With “Send all new users a welcome message with a quick start guide” it sends this PM:
