(Ongoing) Mint is acting strange

Around a week or so ago, the file manager starts to need about 20 - 30 seconds to get a window open.
Also, the update manager (gui) isn’t responding any more. (won’t refresh, won’t close untill forced)
Timeshift isn’t working anymore either. It says the process is working, but the gui isn’t showing.
When i’m logged out, i can’t log back in. The system hangs, needing a reboot to get going again.

  • Distribution & Version: Linux Mint 20.2
  • Kernel information: 5.4.0-91-generic
  • When did the issue start happening? Around a week ago
  • Did anything change that caused it? I wouldn’t know.
  • What steps do you take that cause the problem?
Opening nemo, trying start Timeshift, logging out and back in.
Timeshift for instance gives out this warning, no matter what i do, for instance, this command (pkexec timeshift-gtk) results in: [Warning] Deleted invalid lock" and that’s it. No other information is given.

Update: i’ve uninstalled some software and nemo seems to be working as before after a reboot. I don’t know if this will persist.
I’ve uninstalled superpaper too, since it stopped working, but the wallpaper on the monitors keeps being stretched out to both monitors. Even without the software that did it. How can i fix this please?

Might be a system partitions is full or near full. See if any of these are near 100% in the “Use%” column.

df -h

Also worth checking the logs to see if there’s a party going on in there.

journalctl

You can also have something spamming the logs so fast it eats all your storage space.

Cinnamon I presume? Have you installed any other DE? You could try iotop as well, it’s like htop but for disk activity.

df -h shows tht exept for some snap loop devices (at 100%) there’s nothing fancy going on there.
journalctl on the other hand, shows that much information, that i don’t know where to look first. (some help would be greatly appreciated).

Cinnamon is correct. I haven’t installed a second DE, because i’ve read that it generally is a bad idea.

I’ll have a look at iotop, thank you for the tip!

I just LARP someone who knows how to fix Linux problems and sometimes I get it right :stuck_out_tongue:

When the issue occurs again you could post a chunk of journalctl here or on pastebin. Might reveal something more.

journalctl | tail -n 500

For now, i got timeshift back up again (after a reboot or 2) and restored an earlier snapshot. I’m going to test this and see how this works. If it works, we can close this topic. If not, i’ll post the result of the journal.

Well, restoring the snapshot didn’t help either.

So here’s the output of of journalctl

Update: after installing the newest kernel, things seem to work as they did before.
This topic can be closed now. Thank you all for the help!

What’s the kernel version? Did you go to 5.13.x or the latest version Mint pushed out with the updates, I think it was 5.4.92.

Currently, i’m using the 5.13.x. Yesterday, somewhere around midnight, i applied some updates (they’re frequent now) and lo and behold, the problems were back!
I’m guessing it has something to do with the updates somewhere. Nemo, again, took about 20-30 seconds to show up, timeshift didn’t work (again) and / was nog visible in the gui. Just kept on loading.
So i rebooted, which fixes things temporarily, got timeshift back up and restored a snapshot. Everything’s fine again now, but i’m going to be very very carefull with installing updates. This kernel is supported somewhere untill august, so i’ll hold out till then and see what happens. If this keeps going, i’m switching. Don’t yet know to what, but i’ll figure it out.

AFAIK Mint has some nifty GUI tools where you can look up what was last updated and more logs. Maybe you can find something related to the issue. I cannot remember how it is called, Linux Mint System Info something. Maybe it even shows error messages.

Are you by chance using the “Edge” release of Mint? It includes the HWE kernels from Ubuntu. Check out these comments from the latest Mint Blog post about some people having issues with 5.13.0.23.

https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4212#comment-269242

I am using the latest kernel yes, but i can’t tell if it’s the edge release for sure. I’ve read the comments, but nothing relates to what i’m experiencing right now. (which is kinda frustratring). The problems persist. Only solution right now is timeshift. (if it works at all).
The trouble started with the lts kernel version, but i don’t think that it’s the source of the problems. Updating to a newer kernel solved the problems temporarily, it seems.
Oh, and something i just found out. Rebooting the system doesn’t help, but shutting down completely and booting back up again does. I never had these problems before. Even the timeshift gui appears back like nothing has happened. This baffles me, it really does.
Maybe the (solved) might be changed to “ongoing”?

Well, on my laptop (intel platform) the mint team has succeeded, with the latest update, to bork the updatemanager, timeshift and nemo. This is not good. Also the lts kernel here, will be switching to the newest. Let’s see if that helps.
The plot thickens… here on the laptop, i just checked timeshift. It’s been busy, even with the laptop being off! There are snapshots made, according to timeshift, even when i know for sure, the laptop was off. This is really weird. I’m thinking on installing Ubuntu or other on this machine.

The reason I left Mint was because an update borked the OS on my motherboard and when they fixed it it was only for ASRock, not my lesser known brand SolidRun. After a month I had to let it go and that’s the story of why I moved to Debian.

Yeah, sometimes your just stuck between an ASRock and a hard place and you just have to hop. At least you gave Mint a SolidRun before giving up on it. I’ve had very few issues personally but I might give LMDE a try soon.

Yep, that’s an option i’ve been looking at. Either that, or something completely different. It will start with the laptop and probably spill over to the desktop(s).
Edit; updatemanager needs about 15min to download an update for Firefox. The LDME iso (about 1,9Gb) was downloaded in about 2 min. This weekend will be fun…XD

Debian Testing perchance?

Makes me think if the Mint team was right with their past decision to warn you about kernel updates from the update manager. Or is Mint really acting up, seems strange to me.

Also try to change to a faster mirror.
